September News

Hey Den 1!
All our Scouts want to get awards at each Pack meeting, and we can do it for this month, too. It's an important part of keeping up and earning progress toward rank so we all can reach Bear by February. Whether you were at the previous Den meeting or not, there are some activities that must be done at home.

We're working now on achievements 4, 6, and 9, in the Wolf Handbook. If you didn't get one at the end of last year, or on Monday, you will get a Handbook this Monday.

For this Monday's meeting, have your Scout bring a collection of 10 items. A collection has each piece labeled and is organized in some way. Christopher is bringing 10 Lego guys mounted on a Lego board. They're labeled and in a big ziplock bag. Your Scout can bring 10 cards, coins, rocks, etc. I will ask each boy to briefly discuss the collection. This will take care of Achievement 6.

For Achievement 4, home work includes making a list of phone numbers you may need in an emergency and putting them by each phone or in a central location. Emergency is 911. Poison Control is 1-800-222-1222. Add Parents' contacts, neighbors, relatives, friends, etc. Also, make a list of jobs your Scout is to do around the house, put the chart on the refrigerator and track the jobs for a month. And, visit a government or historic site and discuss its importance. (Libraries are good. The Old State Capitol Museum on State Street is good and free. Wherever you visit, look for a collection of items and discuss how the collection is organized and displayed.)

For Achievement 9, discuss being responsible, check your home for hazards and learn how to make your home safe, nd acheck your home for fire dangers. There are specifics in the Scout Handbook.

You can see that all this is doable, and some must be done by our 6:30 p.m. meeting Monday, so you're not rushed and so your Scout brings his collection of 10 items.
